THE CONVICTION THAT ENFORCES ITSELF

From the January 1959 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A conviction of God's presence embodies power to enforce itself. The glory of Christian Science is that it supplies the base for this conviction and brings healing within the reach of all. A desire to know God better unlatches the gate which leads to freedom from sin, sickness, and want. As confidence in spiritual values overrules the evidence of physical sense, proofs of healing spontaneously appear. The conviction may come suddenly, in flashes of inspiration as irresistible as the onrush of dawn.

Sometimes there is need of deep self-searching and much purification of thought and character before we begin to realize that God is all-inclusive, that He is omnipotent, and that He fills all space. The overcoming of mental resistance to these primal facts of being is the task which must be carried on consistently to ensure success in healing. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, defines God's nature in a very simple sentence when she writes (Unity of Good, p. 3), "If He is All, He can have no consciousness of anything unlike Himself; because, if He is omnipresent, there can be nothing outside of Himself."

In the search for spiritual understanding there is a little three-letter word which commands attention. The word "All" is one which the student soon learns to identify with God, supreme good, and with nothing else. The allness of good leaves no room for evil to assert itself. Once this is seen, the conviction that God alone is real takes root. Christian Science is scientific, and the desired results from its practice come naturally when the requirements have been obeyed. Through the windowpanes of thought cleansed of material shadows to admit the sunshine of infinite Truth, the light of the healing Christ penetrates and finds a welcome. God's allness compels healing as soon as the conviction of His presence is gained.
