THE MORAL AND SPIRITUAL DEMANDS

From the January 1959 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christ Jesus demanded obedience to the moral as well as to the spiritual law. To the impotent man whom he had healed, the Master said (John 5:14), "Sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee." And to the adulterous woman he said (John 8:11), "Go, and sin no more."

Christian Science stresses the importance to us of gaining a higher, a spiritual sense of Biblical admonitions. It urges us to recognize that there is only one God, good, and that He is the creator and perfect maintainer of man. It demands that we progressively reject as unreal anything in human experience that is not good, worthy, or true. In gaining the elevated spiritual sense of Scriptural demands, we find that Science does not condone disobedience to the strict and literal requirements of the moral law. Unless one is cognizant of and obedient to this law, he is not prepared for the spiritual interpretation of its meaning.

It hardly needs to be mentioned that children should be taught to give due honor and respect to their human parents, as one of the Commandments directs. Unless children know how to love their human parents, how can they know and love God? How can they recognize His ever-presence, His perfect control, His infinite creation? How can they enjoy the fullness of life which follows obedience to the spiritual law? John declared (I John 4:20), "He that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?"
