DIVINE LAW VERSUS MATERIAL FORCE

From the December 1959 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Laws of nature are sometimes restrictive, oppressive, and unjust, but God's law is always just, constructive, uplifting, and harmonious, resulting in freedom and well being to the individual who lives in accordance with God's requirements.

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 257): "The distinction between that which is and that which is not law, must be made by Mind and as Mind. Law is either a moral or an immoral force. The law of God is the law of Spirit, a moral and spiritual force of immortal and divine Mind. The so-called law of matter is an immoral force of erring mortal mind, alias the minds of mortals. This so-called force, or law, at work in nature as a power, prohibition, or license, is cruel and merciless."

The so-called laws of nature and material sense, limiting, restricting, and often frightening, are not laws of God but rather the results of belief in a power opposed to God. If we would make the necessary distinction between divine law and material force, we must learn to understand God and man aright. Christian Science teaches that God is divine Mind and that there is but one Mind. Each individual is in reality an expression of this Mind and therefore does not possess a mind apart from God.
