SEEKING WITH TRUE MOTIVES

From the December 1959 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science healing is a holy experience. It is evidence that God's power and presence have dawned upon receptive human consciousness through His eternal Christ. Such healing is unique in that it makes one better morally and spiritually as well as physically.

One's motive in seeking healing through spiritual means is a determining factor in the effect of such treatment. Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, shows the importance of praying with right motives. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" she says (p. 326), "Working and praying with true motives, your Father will open the way."

When one's motive in seeking Christian Science treatment is to learn more of the nature of God, of His unchanging laws of harmony, and of one's own divine sonship, healing will be one of the signs following. But if the Scientist's motives in turning to divine metaphysics is to use it as if it were a theological pill, that is to say, solely to find ease in the flesh, he will likely be disappointed. Prayer that does not go beyond a personal sense of self will not heal.
