This testimony is gratefully given in acknowledgment of God's power and glory revealed to me through the study of Christian Science. Although I had the privilege of attending a Christian Science Sunday School from infancy until the age of twenty, I did not make the truths of this Science my own. It was my religion, and I believed it. But the material world around me seemed tangible and desirable. I felt I could always call for Christian Science at a later and more convenient time when there was nothing else to do.
How glad I am that "later" came sooner than I had expected! For several years I had eagerly sought joy and security through the physical senses. I found that, in the words of Mary Baker Eddy (Science and Health, p. 536), "Their supposed joys are cheats."
Disappointed and unhappy, I began to suffer from ill-health, and in darkness and fear I turned to medicine for help. After a thorough physical examination I was told that my ill-health was caused by a glandular fever, a condition of the blood for which there was at that time no prescribed treatment. I was also told it would be necessary for me to wear glasses because of astigmatism.
