THE SUBSTANCE OF CHURCH MEMBERSHIP

From the March 1959 issue of The Christian Science Journal

WHEN one becomes a member of a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, he does so as an expression of gratitude. Through Christian Science he has felt the healing touch of the Christ, either in the overcoming of physical disease or in the correction of some other inharmonious condition, and wishes to share with the community and with the world the fruits of this Science of Christianity. This sharing is in great measure accomplished by means of membership and service in The Mother Church and its branches in many parts of the world.

One dictionary definition of "substance" is "that which underlies all outward manifestations." In this sense, the substance of a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, is the spiritual activity of its members.

Spiritual activity is a corollary of spiritual sense and is expressed in progressive thinking, the unfoldment of right ideas, cooperation, and self-sacrifice. It is spontaneous, enthusiastic, uplifting. It is prayer without ceasing, the recognition of the allness of God, good, and of the consequent nothingness and impotence of evil in any form.
