Our Individual Kingdom

From the March 1959 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The gates of the kingdom of heaven will not open
To the big battalions or to the battering-ram.
Hurl the mightiest missile against them; nothing will happen.
Nor will they yield to the wiliest stratagem.

But he who comes alone, as a son returning,
In man's individual kingdom claiming his rights,
On no power relying but God's, on no wisdom leaning,
Discovers himself already within the gates.
