IN a world of contending mental forces, these words of Mary Baker Eddy on page 104 of "Miscellaneous Writings" point the way to protection, freedom, and peace: "Clothed, and in its right Mind, man's individuality is sinless, deathless, harmonious, eternal." The understanding of man's God-given individuality provides effective defense against the aggressive mental influences so apparent in today's world. How grateful we can be for the Science of Christianity, which alone can meet the growing challenge of these influences!
All thinking persons are alert to the need of defense. Various aggressive ideologies are besieging humanity with subtle and vicious propaganda. As a means of dominating their people, certain political systems are practicing thought control techniques based on medical and psychiatric research.
The challenge comes close to home. The press and the air waves abound with insistent appeals on behalf of self-indulgent materialism, appeals to cupidity, vanity, pride, appetite, material sensation. There is a pronounced tendency in some segments of the mass communication industries to try to influence or control the thoughts of individuals without their realizing it.
