We read in Psalms (62:11), "God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God." When I read for the first time the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, the passage quoted above became clear to me. It occurred to me that I was giving power to food which it did not have if all power belongs to God.
Earlier in my life I had been plagued by a condition known as food allergy. If I ate certain foods, my skin would break out into hives, and these would last for about two or three weeks. During these frequent occurrences I would have to stay home from school and from other interesting activities. Many medical tests were made to determine the cause of this condition, and the only preventive remedy given was the advice to avoid offending foods.
When I read the passage from Science and Health which says (p. 228), "There is no power apart from God. Omnipotence has all-power, and to acknowledge any other power is to dishonor God," I determined that I would not dishonor God by giving power to food. For more than sixteen years now I have experienced complete freedom in eating all kinds of foods under many circumstances, without any ill effects.
