In the Preface to the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy writes (p. vii), "The wakeful shepherd beholds the first faint morning beams, ere cometh the full radiance of a risen day." The first faint beams of the truth of Christian Science came to me when, upon accepting the invitation of a friend, I attended a Christian Science lecture and later a service in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist.
I did not understand much of what I heard at the time, but I felt that this was the religion I would follow when I needed it, not realizing how much I needed it right then and there. My life from an early age seemed to be full of sorrow and care, and I lacked a proper sense of stability. How grateful I am for the understanding that Christian Science has given me of God as Father-Mother and of myself as His spiritual idea!
When my oldest daughter was a small child and not yet in school, she had a serious ear condition which an ear specialist said might prove fatal unless it was operated upon immediately. The operation was performed, but before long the difficulty returned, and the operation was repeated. It was about this time that I attended the above-mentioned lecture and later purchased a copy of Science and Health.
