INDIVIDUALIZING INFINITE POWER

From the June 1960 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"TO live so as to keep human consciousness in constant relation with the divine, the spiritual, and the eternal, is to individualize infinite power." Thus writes Mrs. Eddy in Miscellany (p. 160). When we succeed in keeping our thoughts and lives in unison "with the divine, the spiritual, and the eternal," we can see only the perfect, holy man of God's creating right where the false, mortal or carnal sense of man claims to be. Then we are able "to individualize infinite power" and to emulate Christ Jesus' healing works.

To accept and hold steadfastly to the concept of God as Spirit, Love, Life, Truth, and Mind and of man as God's reflection leads the earnest student of Christian Science to the spiritual attitude and demonstration in which he can fulfill Christ Jesus' promise (John 14:12), "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also." It is the Christ, the divine idea or manifestation of God, which Jesus represented that we are urged today to acknowledge as man's true selfhood.

In the reality of Mind's spiritual creation, man cannot help expressing God. Our Leader states in Science and Health (p. 470), "Man is the expression of God's being." When we learn to look beyond the limited, mortal counterfeit of man to the ideal man, reflecting only Christly qualities, we begin to understand man as Spirit's likeness. Thus we are progressively freed from the trials which arise from accepting the false concept of man as a being sometimes good and sometimes bad, sometimes sick and sometimes well, and having a materially limited intelligence which often falls short of meeting expanding needs.
