ONE day when Christ Jesus was with his disciples in Caesarea Philippi, he asked them this penetrating question (Matt. 16:15): "Whom say ye that I am?" Peter's answer, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God," showed the Master that he had not preached the gospel of the kingdom of heaven in vain.
In Jesus' response we find the basis for scientific Christianity, which was so long in reaching mankind. He said: "Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."
Spiritually discerning the true meaning of Jesus' term "rock," Mrs. Eddy defines it as "spiritual foundation; Truth" (Science and Health, p. 593). She saw that Jesus purposed building his church upon the understanding of the Christ, Truth, which the beliefs of evil cannot destroy.
