One day while standing in a doorway sheltering me from a shower of rain, I saw the notice of a Christian Science Reading Room on the premises. At this time in my experience I was in great need of help both physically and spiritually, and I know now that the guiding hand of God led me to enter the room to study and pray.
I read from the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, for over an hour without my glasses, which I had left at home that day. I did not suffer the blinding headache which usually followed my attempts to read without them. I was healed of astigmatism at this my first glimpse of the teachings of Christian Science.
I was healed at the same time of the great fear which had beset me: that I should become the helpless victim of rheumatoid arthritis. At an early age I began to suffer from this difficulty, which I believed to be hereditary. I had been told that I could not be cured. Through holding to the truth that man is spiritual, made in God's likeness, as we are taught in Christian Science, and through endeavoring to reflect the qualities of God, I have led a very active and free life through the ensuing years. Among other activities, I have done much gardening, often in inclement weather, without any discomfort.
