Christian Science found me at the brink of hopelessness due to ill-health, frustration, confusion, and grief. While alone in a large city, without home, funds, or work, I went to a Sunday evening service at a Church of Christ, Scientist. After the service an usher who had observed that I was near a state of collapse came to my rescue. She and her husband helped me from the church and lovingly gave me a copy of the Journal, explaining that God would direct me to select a practitioner. I shall always be grateful for the vigilance of that usher who was alert to my need and met it in the most compassionate way.
This was the turning point in my experience, because I was led that very night to call a practitioner. Within a few weeks there was a complete transformation in my circumstances as the truth unfolded to my thought through Christian Science treatment, study, and church attendance. Severe periodic pains, believed to be hereditary, were eliminated, and various types of medical aid, on which I had depended for twenty years, were put aside at the beginning of my study. Through the sincere prayer to serve mankind, I was instantaneously healed of grief and separation caused by the passing on of a loved one.
An interesting and fruitful position which enabled me to travel all over the United States unfolded through the prayerful work of the practitioner. Suggestions of lack of strength and experience were overcome when I turned completely to God, knowing that, as we read in the forty-sixth Psalm, "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."
