CHANGING ONE'S MIND

From the February 1961 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"I've changed my mind" is a remark often heard during the course of a day. Salespeople in department stores find that it is amazing how suddenly men and women change their minds.

The faculty of changing his mind can be of great help to the student of Christian Science when properly understood, for a change of mind is usually all that is needed to dispel suffering. Mrs. Eddy points to this as a need in Christian Science healing. She says in Science and Health (p. 162), "The effect of this Science is to stir the human mind to a change of base, on which it may yield to the harmony of the divine Mind." A careful study of the chapter "Christian Science Practice" in the same book acquaints the student with many truths and rules which help him to change his mind from erroneous mortal opinions to scientific, right conclusions.

Christ Jesus gave this effective rule for stirring the human mind to a change of base (John 8:31, 32): "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." To the writer, this passage means, "If you will continue to study my words and daily practice what you understand of my teachings, then the truth will be revealed to you and the truth will free you from suffering, sinful beliefs." The truth brings to the sincere seeker of Truth a change of mind, in other words, a change of consciousness and hence freedom from a suffering sense of bondage.
