USING WHAT WE KNOW

From the February 1961 issue of The Christian Science Journal

How many times have we been imposed upon by sickness, sin, or lack simply because we felt that our understanding of Christian Science was not sufficient to overcome the discord? It is reassuring to know that the understanding of Truth, when correctly applied, will enable us to handle inharmonious situations arising in daily life. Referring to the necessity for proofs of healing rather than for mere professions of faith, Mrs. Eddy writes (Science and Health, p. 233), "This is an element of progress, and progress is the law of God, whose law demands of us only what we can certainly fulfil."

The very fact that a student of Christian Science is faced with a particular difficulty points to the fact that he is ready to deal with it successfully. Knowing this, one should not be discouraged by any out-of-proportion relationship between what seems to be a hard problem and his own limited understanding. The magnitude of a problem is purely a matter of perspective. Did not the simple questions posed by our first-grade teacher often seem staggering? But the power of even a grain of Truth, its efficacy and applicability, are forever established.

A subtle device of mortal mind that would keep one from using what he knows of Christian Science is the argument that truth is transitional; that what one learns today will be rendered obsolete by what he learns tomorrow. This, of course, is often the case with material so-called knowledge. But the Christian Science of sixty or seventy years ago is the Christian Science of today and of eternity. And as one grows in the understanding of this Science, he does not discard its simpler truths for more complex ones, but uses the simpler ones to build upon, constantly adding to his store of spiritual knowledge.
