SCIENTIFIC CHRISTIANITY

From the February 1961 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The Christianity taught and practiced by Christ Jesus is scientific in nature. It is understandable and demonstrable, not mystical. It deals intelligently with the spiritual facts of being that material appearances misrepresent. Christian Science is restoring this scientific Christianity and in so doing is acquainting us with the primal spiritual order that exists right where material sense would have us behold a material universe.

Paul hinted at the significance of this Science when he said to the Christians of Corinth (I Cor. 13:12), "Now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face." Divine realities are seen only through spiritual sense.

An important step in gaining a demonstrable understanding of scientific Christianity is to see clearly the relationship that exists between the divine and the human. Because Christ is divine and Jesus was human, the life of Christ Jesus is a perfect illustration of the relationship of these terms. Christ is the Son of God; Jesus was the Son of man and Christ his spiritual selfhood. "The divinity of the Christ was made manifest in the humanity of Jesus," writes Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health (p. 25).
