Testimonies of Healing

On looking back through the years, I...

From the September 1961 issue of The Christian Science Journal

On looking back through the years, I remember that my first healing in Christian Science was the result of the realization of the great truth that God knows no evil, sin, disease, or death.

I was asking a practitioner about this, and she assured me that it was so; but I said, "You limit God, who must know everything if He is all-knowing and all-powerful."

She smiled gently and said: "Let me read you something on that subject." So she read these passages from the first chapter of a book entitled "Unity of Good" by our beloved Leader (p. 3): "God is All-in-all," and, "If He is All, He can have no consciousness of anything unlike Himself."

I stopped her there, for the light of Truth was breaking in my consciousness. I could see that it would be impossible for God, who is Love, to know anything unlike good. Then I also saw that I, as a son of God, could know only good.

From that moment the world became a new place for me; my burdens began to slip away. I had caught a glimpse of my unity with God, my spiritual sonship as His idea. Since that time I have been privileged to witness many beautiful healings through this understanding of Christian Science.

I should like to relate two experiences which show clearly that God is ever present. One took place whilst my husband and I were on a holiday in Switzerland. I had been studying the Lesson-Sermon, outlined in the Quarterly, early that morning. The subject was "Spirit." A Bible message stood out clearly and was full of meaning to me. It was (Ps. 139:7-10): "Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?... If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me."

I thought, "We can never get out of God's presence, because we are one with Him as His reflection."

After breakfast my husband asked me if I would like to go rowing on the lake. I said I would; so we went down to the edge of the water. While he was arranging for a boat, with the boatmen, I noticed they were not at first willing for us to have one, but consented afterwards.

It was a lovely, calm, sunny day, but we were the only ones on the lake. When we had rowed some distance, suddenly a strong wind blew up, and we were tossed round and round. Then I saw a huge wave coming towards us; it looked as if we could not escape, for we had lost control of the boat, and the water was coming in.

Then I found myself declaring very loudly the verses I have quoted. The result was instantaneous. We had touched the law of harmony, for we were able to pull the boat into calm waters, and the wave passed by. This happened some years ago, and our gratitude to God was great.

About five years ago, whilst I was driving with a friend, our car collided with a van and was knocked upside down, but we were pulled out unhurt except for a few minor cuts and bruises. A crowd soon gathered, and I heard such remarks as, "What a miracle they were not killed!"

An ambulance was called, and we were taken to a hospital. I refused an injection or any other aid. That evening I was able to keep an appointment, and the following afternoon I attended an executive board meeting of the branch Church of Christ, Scientist, of which I am a member.

My gratitude for our revered Leader is unbounded. Through her consecrated selfless love for humanity, she gave us the precious truth, which, when humbly and rightfully applied, solves all our problems.1—
