Five years ago my husband and I were...

From the April 1962 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Five years ago my husband and I were living in a log cabin in southern Indiana. We had abandoned our college careers because they did not answer our questions about life, and we were now, by contrast, trying to find meaning in a simple existence close to nature. This did not afford us any solution either, and we felt completely lost. We tried what we thought was Christianity, but even the loving sincerity of an orthodox country church did not meet our needs.

Then an attack of arthritis left me dependent on crutches to get about. I had a new baby to take care of and an older child. My husband was also ill. Six weeks after I became crippled, we felt impelled to go to Chicago. My husband found work there, and although the move was very difficult for us, we achieved it, doing everything ourselves. I knew little of God, but I prayed.

Soon after our move we met a group of Christian Scientists. I noticed them and their happy children, and I wished my children could have the same freedom their children had. However, I was not willing to admit the healing power of Christian Science until, after the arrival of another baby and what seemed to me a sleepless year in an overcrowded apartment, I went to a service at a Christian Science Society. The visit was a turning point. Here I found love, intelligence, and beauty combined. I began to study Christian Science regularly right away, and four weeks later my husband also attended a service.
