HOW WE BEST PAY OUR DEBTS

From the April 1962 issue of The Christian Science Journal

An honest person always pays his debts, and when he prays the Lord's Prayer and comes to the line, "Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors" (Matt. 6:12), it may seem that these words have no direct application to him. He may sincerely say: "But I owe no man. I am fair in all my dealings with everyone. What debts do I have?"

It is well to stop and think what a debt is. Is it not the obligation we have of repaying for services or for good received? Then do we not all have a very large debt to divine Love, the supreme source of all goodness? The good that we receive as the reflection of God is beyond measure. Our Father-Mother God cares for all of us. There is no need which is not met when we put our trust in the all-present, all-powerful, and all-loving God.

All of us who are students of Christian Science can pause and consider the many blessings received, such as physical healings, relationships adjusted harmoniously, and supply to fill all our needs in daily living. Sometimes our own prayerful work has been sufficient for these demonstrations of God's power. Sometimes we have received help from a consecrated practitioner. But whether the blessings result from work done by ourselves or from that done by a practitioner, the spiritually scientific basis of our prayers was revealed to our beloved Leader.
