I was at home one day when an airplane crashed, demolishing a church at the back of our apartment building and setting fire to our building. For a few minutes, as the building swayed and objects flew around, it did not seem possible that I could be saved. However, I was so conscious of man's at-one-ment with God as His spiritual idea that I was calm and unperturbed. I prayed aloud, "I am safe and will continue to be safe, for God's loving arms enfold me." I do not know how I was able to leave the apartment without being touched. The glory must go to God.
As I walked out of the apartment I could see that the room in which I had been standing only minutes before was on fire. As I descended the stairs I thanked God for His ever-presence, which I knew is an established fact, whatever material evidence was being presented to the contrary.
How grateful I am that a Christian Science Reading Room was near for refuge! One of the first thoughts expressed to me by the Reading Room attendant was, "Your home is safe." In view of the scene which I had just witnessed, it was hard for me to accept this as applicable to the material structure; but I replied that I certainly knew that my true home in divine consciousness was safe.
