I am grateful for having had the privilege of attending the Sunday School in a Church of Christ, Scientist, from the age of four. I had much protection and many healings; but I did not begin to study Science diligently until I had children of my own.
At that time I began reading the Bible Lessons, found in the Quarterly, and also began reading the Sentinel. The testimonies of healing published in each issue of the Sentinel showed me how one could do his own prayerful metaphysical work. I began to see that physical difficulties were the result of fear, sinful thinking, or false character traits, which must be overcome by the correct application of Science. I am grateful for the enlightenment that comes from all our periodicals, which really are our missionaries.
Early in my married life I was stricken with acute appendicitis. Instead of turning to God, I allowed myself to be persuaded to go to a medical doctor for examination. But when he told me I should have an immediate operation, I refused to consent to it. I went home and called a Christian Science practitioner, who prayed for me daily for about two weeks. Much fear, the first I could remember having, had to be overcome; but through steadfastly clinging to the truth that God is man's only physician, I was healed. That was approximately twenty years ago, and the difficulty has not returned.
