It is believed that the earth's atmosphere determines to a large extent the living conditions of mortal man. He is thought to be directly and indirectly sustained by the gases composing it. Its conditions of temperature, moisture content, and motion are supposed to provide in large measure the degree of his comfort, prosperity, and security. It is the environment in which he carries on his everyday activities. It seems to be sometimes beneficial to his well-being and sometimes hostile to it.
What do we learn in Christian Science regarding these beliefs about atmosphere? In his address on Mars' Hill, Paul said of God (Acts 17:28), "In him we live, and move, and have our being." A well-loved hymn in the Christian Science Hymnal expresses the same thought in another way (No. 144),
In atmosphere of Love divine,
We live, and move, and breathe.
