"Ye shall know the truth, and the truth...

From the July 1963 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32). This statement of Jesus has been proved true in my own experience.

About thirteen years ago I seemed to be without hope. I had exhausted most of the specialized fields of medicine, including psychiatry, trying in vain to overcome what was termed "acute anxiety," which resulted in high blood pressure, a stomach disorder, fluctuating weight problems, and panic at the thought of being alone, at going out — in fact, just panic for no apparent reason.

In the effort to overcome these disturbing symptoms myself, I would drink, eat, or try to sleep, but life was a constant dread. The only relief was in alcohol or sleep, but the fears were greater when the effects of the alcohol wore off or when I awoke.
