OBEDIENCE

From the September 1963 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The Bible records numerous instances of great blessings which came as the result of obedience. Noah obeyed God when told to build the ark, and thus he and all his family were protected from the flood. Through obedience to God's commands, Moses was able to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt. Naaman, when finally persuaded to obey Elisha's orders to wash seven times in Jordan, received his healing of leprosy.

Obedience, as we understand it in Christian Science, is subjection to the will of God. Therefore, in its fullest sense, it is the highest attainment we can hope for. When we have reached the point where we can practice obedience to its complete extent, we shall ascend.

Obedience is a yielding, a silencing of human will, a letting go of all sense of selfhood apart from God. It implies trust, faithfulness, and childlike submission and denotes a following rather than a leading. It takes great humility to be obedient.
