Nearly one hundred years ago Mrs. Eddy discovered the fact that God, Mind, is the only cause and substance of existence, the only reality of all being. She was led to this discovery through revelation, through the scientific study of the nature of God as set forth in the Scriptures, and through the acceptance of the Biblical teaching that God, Spirit, made all that was made. Her discovery challenged the theory of a material basis of creation.
Our Leader writes on page 268 of Science and Health: "In the material world, thought has brought to light with great rapidity many useful wonders. With like activity have thought's swift pinions been rising towards the realm of the real, to the spiritual cause of those lower things which give impulse to inquiry. Belief in a material basis, from which may be deduced all rationality, is slowly yielding to the idea of a metaphysical basis, looking away from matter to Mind as the cause of every effect."
In his book "The Nature of the Physical World," published in 1929, Sir Arthur Eddington, the English scientist, wrote, "To put the conclusion crudely—the stuff of the world is mind stuff." In another passage he stated: "We have only one approach, namely, through our direct knowledge of mind. The supposed approach through the physical world leads only into the cycle of physics, where we run round and round like a kitten chasing its tail and never reach the world stuff at all."
