My first healing in Christian Science was an instantaneous one of the smoking habit. It was brought about through my reading the testimonies of healing in a Christian Science Sentinel which a member of my family brought home from a literature distribution rack in a beauty shop. We knew nothing of Science except that it was supposed to heal. For several years I had made an effort to stop smoking, with no success. After reading the testimonies I felt a great sense of peace, and I remember thinking that if others could be healed through Science, so could I. The next morning I arose completely healed of any wish to smoke.
I had a deep desire to find out how this healing had been accomplished and read Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy periodically for two years, understanding little of what I read. Then one day I came to page 504 where Mrs. Eddy makes this statement: "The rays of infinite Truth, when gathered into the focus of ideas, bring light instantaneously, whereas a thousand years of human doctrines, hypotheses, and vague conjectures emit no such effulgence."
This seemed to me the most wonderful statement I had ever read. I immediately accepted it as true, and it was so clear to me that I was healed at that moment of the drinking habit. This healing changed the whole course of my life. I became an earnest student of Christian Science and later a member of The Mother Church and a branch church and had class instruction.
