Christian Science teaches its adherents to rely wholly on the spiritual power of prayer in overcoming their physical difficulties. They learn to turn unreservedly to God for healing, if sickness, disease, or accident seems to come into their experience. If students need aid, experienced Christian Science practitioners are always available to assist them.
Often it seems difficult for others to understand why the Christian Scientist does not turn to doctors and medicines for help. The Scientist feels that to rely on medical aid would be to dishonor his heavenly Father. The First Commandment, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me" (Ex. 20:3), is accepted literally by Christian Scientists.
Christ Jesus and his disciples demonstrated that sickness, sin, and death are to be overcome through spiritual communion with God, the Supreme Being. The Way-shower never used or recommended drugs in treating disease. When the Psalmist sang praises to the Lord, "who healeth all thy diseases" (Ps. 103: 3), he must have seen in his own experience the ever-availability of this healing power.
