I came into Christian Science about eight years ago, through a wonderful healing. Knowing nothing of this religion, I had depended on material means until they were exhausted. At that time I was very ill. I had been given up by the doctors, and I returned home after spending months in hospitals.
I had suffered from a condition of blood poisoning at frequent intervals since childhood. More than a year before I was introduced to Christian Science the disease appeared in my hip and leg and gradually and painfully spread over most of my body. I was kept under sedation all the time. I also had pernicious anemia, valvular heart disease, and diabetes. It looked as if I would pass on, but then a Christian Scientist visited me. I was unconscious the first time she came to see me. When she came the next day she found me conscious, and she talked to me about her religion. She came almost every day, reading and explaining the Bible, together with the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. God's goodness to His children was explained to me in a new light. I began to see man as God's idea, not a sick, sinning mortal. This revelation pushed away many clouds of uncertainty, revealing God as a loving, harmonious Father-Mother God.
I could not see to read, but I was grateful for the inspiration which came to me from the Lord's Prayer, the twenty-third Psalm, and other passages from the Bible which I knew from memory. I was upheld by the wonderful statements read to me from Science and Health. One is (p. 494), "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." This statement, as well as many others, was a constant source of help.
