WISDOM AND UNDERSTANDING

From the March 1966 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the Bible we read, "The fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding" (Job 28:28). Years of time and fortunes of money are spent in the search for wisdom and understanding; but scholastic study and the human intellect are usually considered the source of these qualities.

Educating the human mind is not the ultimate answer to the search for enlightenment. Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health: "If materialistic knowledge is power, it is not wisdom. It is but a blind force" (p. 196). Human education has an important place in our daily lives, but divine wisdom and understanding alone can heal the fundamental ills of humanity.

Of what avail are all the vast stores of material knowledge or higher degrees of scholastic attainment if one has not yet learned to love God and to depart from evil? Love for God, good, is true wisdom; and the ability to reject evil and exemplify only the good is indeed real understanding. Mankind must part with all carnal, or mortal, beliefs.
