Christian Scientists have much reason to be grateful for their periodicals. Many of them were led to look into Christian Science after taking from a literature distribution box a periodical placed there by a member of one of the branch Churches of Christ, Scientist. This incident caused them to visit one of these churches and later to take advantage of the opportunities offered by it. Thus they have found their lives enriched, for a Christian Scientist usually experiences intrinsic happiness and continuing inner joy. He has seen proof in his own experience, and in that of others, that health, employment, and the expression of abilities which he had not known before can be gained through the demonstration of Christian Science.
Members of a Christian Science church who serve with love and thoroughness on a literature distribution committee know that the simple duties of preparing and distributing the periodicals are not the main part of their work. They understand that if this activity is to accomplish anything of value, there is other work to be done—the prayerful mental work of recognizing God as the all-acting, all-seeing Mind and of maintaining in consciousness the true spiritual concept of Church. In Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy defines this concept as, "The structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle" (p. 583).
The acknowledgment that God is Principle, Love, makes distribution activity meaningful. The committee member knows, indeed, that the essence of all good work is love, and all that needs to be done must be done with love. He is confident that the periodicals will fulfill the mission that Mrs. Eddy designed for them and that the individuals seeking the Christ ideal will be guided to find the Christ Science, will be led to the light of the Christ.
