"The substance of an idea"

From the May 1966 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science, in accordance with the Bible, teaches that man is the image of God, who is Spirit, Mind. The fleshly man is not the likeness of Spirit. The difference between the real man and the mortal concept of man is stated plainly in the first two chapters of Genesis. A close study of the writings of the prophets shows clearly that they glimpsed the real nature of man; and Isaiah counseled his hearers, "Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of?"Isa. 2:22;

Jesus stated, "That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit."John 3:6; The Apostle John explained that those who believe in Christ, the true idea of God, receive the "power to become the sons of God . . . which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God."1:12, 13 Paul had much to say about the instability of the flesh and its enmity against Spirit.

The true substance of man is Spirit, not flesh. The understanding of this fact is the remedy for sin, disease, lack, fear, and discords, which have their source in the belief that matter is substance.
