The Perfection of Man

From the May 1966 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One of the basic facts revealed by Christian Science is contained in this profound statement by Mrs. Eddy: "The great truth in the Science of being, that the real man was, is, and ever shall be perfect, is incontrovertible; for if man is the image, reflection, of God, he is neither inverted nor subverted, but upright and Godlike."Science and Health, p. 200; This "great truth" needs to be understood and demonstrated.

The perfection of man is not a new idea. Christ Jesus expressed the same truth when he taught, "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect."Matt. 5:48; And by seeing the perfect spiritual man right where there appeared to be a sick or a sinning mortal, the Master was able to perform his marvelous healing works. Any follower of Jesus can heal in this way.

The key to the emulation of Christ Jesus' ability to heal is a right understanding of what it means to see man as perfect. It surely does not mean to attempt to see a perfect mortal. That would be a form of mesmerism. It would be making a reality of matter, the opposite of God, Spirit, and hence would claim as real all the trials and troubles that stem from matter. This could never result in healing.
