Dispelling Blind Belief

From the November 1967 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The ever-widening scope of information and research has been a devastating challenge to the blind beliefs held by mankind. On every hand traditional beliefs have been subjected to the searchlight of inquiry and have been discarded when they have been exposed as without foundation in fact. Many religions are under such pressure at the present time. It is interesting to note that many religious concepts have their origin in superstition.

One of the grand indications of this broad movement of thought out of darkness into light has been the discovery of Christian Science by Mrs. Eddy. In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures she says, "Nothing is more antagonistic to Christian Science than a blind belief without understanding, for such a belief hides Truth and builds on error." Science and Health, p. 83; This Science is based upon a comprehensible God and His demonstrable law. It does not depend upon blind faith.

Even though one may have experienced healing effects in this Science without understanding the laws involved, he should quickly seek to comprehend the why of the healing. One should not rest on belief but proceed to understanding, for this is the way of permanent harmony. Mrs. Eddy did not comprehend at first the full import of her own healing when she discovered this Science, but she pursued the search until the full Science of her discovery was revealed to her. Then she knew why she was healed, and she was able to use this knowledge in healing others.
