Divine Promises Have Requirements

From the November 1967 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian joy is founded in large measure on the promises of God recorded in the Holy Bible. And often in terms of these promises the Christian Scientist finds a growing acquaintance with his heavenly Father as he progresses in the study and practice of his religion. The writings of Mrs. Eddy reveal the nature of God as good, ever-present, and all-powerful. This understanding of the creator enables the student of this religion to find peace and strength in recognition of his unchallenged, unchanging selfhood as God's child.

This newly-found identity as an individual, spiritual consciousness instead of a limited, mortal personality is unfolded as thought entertains more and more the responsibility of the child to his heavenly Parent. The Father's promises evidence the Mother's love. As one awakes to this spiritual family relationship, the student quickly discerns that there are usually spiritual requirements to be met before the promises are fulfilled in his human experience.

This alertness is a source of joy, not a measure of frustration; for being mindful of the requirements and making the effort to meet them give one confidence in his worthiness to receive more of good. The Holy Scriptures are dear to all of us because we find in them the promises of safety, health, happiness, and success. We may well ponder them daily, seeking the instruction which will lead to their fulfillment; for we learn in Christian Science that spiritual understanding is required to bring out good in human experience.
