Music That Heals

From the November 1967 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The proper choice of music for services in Churches of Christ, Scientist, should be a matter of demonstration. This demonstration can be made as the members depend upon God, divine Mind, for guidance and recognize Him as the only source of wisdom, beauty, and harmony.

A musical composition either communicates truth or suggests error, depending upon its source. Music that communicates the qualities of God heals, whereas music that suggests error is destructive of harmony in thought. To communicate healing, a musical composition must reflect inspiration.

There should be only one true motive for playing or singing in the church services: to heal mankind by glorifying God. The healing essence of music lies in its expression of perfection, even as the effectiveness of the healing Christ is demonstrated through unselfed love.
