"To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." These encouraging words on page vii of the Preface to the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy gave me much hope and joy when I first heard of Christian Science over thirty years ago through a dear aunt and uncle who were faithful students of this Science.
The textbook, a gift to my mother by the same aunt and uncle, was the first book on Christian Science I read. Although I understood very little of it, I was much impressed with the simple and logical statements of truth the book contained. I became so absorbed in reading that I couldn't leave it for a single moment. I was also given some literature, copies of The Christian Science Journal and Christian Science Sentinel, which I read very intently. From many interesting talks and discussions with either my aunt or my uncle, I gained a better understanding of this newfound religion. I was shown how to study the weekly Lesson-Sermon from the Quarterly.
I started attending regularly the Sunday services and Wednesday testimony meetings of a Christian Science Society. The desire to join in membership with the society came later after it was pointed out to me that I could not do so unless I had left off the use of tobacco. I am grateful to say that through my continued study, this false habit fell away. I was accepted as a member of the society, and later I joined The Mother Church. This last step has been a great blessing.
