Mrs. Eddy makes this striking statement in Science and Health: "This is a leading point in the Science of Soul, that Principle is not in its idea. Spirit, Soul, is not confined in man, and is never in matter."Science and Health, p. 467; When one learns that God is infinite, that Life, Truth, and Love are without limitation, he can no longer apply the term "in" to his thought of God. God cannot be contained in anything, and one cannot properly think of God in terms of corporeality. The right concept of God as infinite, divine Principle has much to do with our right concept of man as God's image and likeness and our demonstration of health, harmony, and abundance.
God is reflected in His creation, but He is not contained in it. The cause cannot be subject to the effect. The belief that it can results in some of the fundamental misconceptions of the human mind, such as the belief that Life is in matter, that intelligence is in brain, and that Soul is in body. This type of thinking is also expressed in the belief that Deity is a man-made concept and hence subject to change and variableness. These are basic theological errors which, if accepted, prevent one from demonstrating man's divine Principle and hence from realizing dominion over limitation, sin, disease, and death.
Mrs. Eddy tells us, "The name Adam represents the false supposition that Life is not eternal, but has beginning and end; that the infinite enters the finite, that intelligence passes into non-intelligence, and that Soul dwells in material sense; that immortal Mind results in matter, and matter in mortal mind; that the one God and creator entered what He created, and then disappeared in the atheism of matter."p. 580;
