The Golden Thread of Bible Promises

From the February 1967 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Perhaps the most remarkable and provocative aspect of all human history, culture, and advancement centers in and around the Holy Bible. No document, no book, no single or combined human effort has had the effect or purpose in human affairs that the Bible has exercised through the centuries. The purpose of God for men is woven as a golden thread through its pages, even in its revealing insights of the thoughts and hearts of the prophets and the holy men of God. What is this golden thread? It is the promise and fulfillment of God's saving power expressed to the children of men.

The Bible is filled with instances of the power of God, divine Love, acting on behalf of the sons of men. This power of God saved and delivered them from the claims and beliefs of evil: bondage, sickness, accidents, pestilence, prison, death, blindness, deafness, lameness. But how often do we stop to think that the Bible is also filled with promises of what God's love for man will ultimately do to all evil beliefs?

Have we thought of God's holy purpose for mankind from the standpoint of the prophecies, for instance? There are many of these: the prophecies of Isaiah, of Jesus, Peter, and John, just to mention the most commonly known. What do these promises mean to us today? What is their ultimate meaning to all the world?
