Throughout history there shine resplendent examples of men and women who have made extraordinary contributions toward the release of mankind from material limitations. Everyone can recall names of pioneers in many fields of knowledge as well as heroic characters who have arisen in times of stress to lead mankind from subjugation to evil on to glorious victory.
Moral courage is a quality conspicuous in the life of such individuals. This quality strengthens hope and faith and bulwarks love for mankind, for it is moral courage which bases thinking on the noblest standards regardless of popular opinion and brings daring to act with highest purpose. Moral courage, which may be termed the general in command of the other moral qualities, leading them forward to expression in human life, is an essential in the work of the Christian Scientist. Mrs. Eddy writes: "Moral courage is 'the lion of the tribe of Juda,' the king of the mental realm. Free and fearless it roams in the forest. Undisturbed it lies in the open field, or rests in 'green pastures, . . . beside the still waters.'" Science and Health, p. 514; This kingly quality of dominion and leadership, described by the prophet Isaiah as a lion which companions with the lamb, is motivated by the Christ and knows true safety in all situations.
Mere animal courage, on the other hand, is based on a belief in materialism. Animal courage is not truly confident but afraid, and this fear is often the source of its open violence or stealthy attack. Mrs. Eddy speaks from experience and observation when she says: "There is too much animal courage in society and not sufficient moral courage. Christians must take up arms against error at home and abroad. They must grapple with sin in themselves and in others, and continue this warfare until they have finished their course. If they keep the faith, they will have the crown of rejoicing." pp. 28, 29;
