Honesty is a quality which is universally respected and admired but which often seems difficult to express in its fullest sense. An attorney had proof of the power of honesty while practicing law in a large city. Certain classes of cases had to be approved by a government committee before they could be filed in court. The attorney had been working for some time preparing such a case. As he worked over the papers, it became clear that the case did not meet the requirements of the committee in three important aspects. However, he had become convinced of the rightness of the cause and had a strong feeling that a way should be found for the case to be approved.
Being a student of Christian Science, the attorney was accustomed to look to our heavenly Father for guidance. In this instance he turned in prayer to seek a higher law. He was led to complete the necessary papers and then to make an appointment to present them. The chairman of the committee, who was a friend, examined the file and made the comment, "You know the committee will never approve this." He then made some notes and handed them and the file to the attorney. Upon examining the notes, the attorney found that there were changes which altered the facts. He objected and was met with the incredulity and ridicule of the chairman, who had extended himself to help him out of what was considered a hopeless plight.
Because of unusual circumstances, the attorney was directly involved in this case and the possible profits were very substantial. On the way back to the office the devil argued: "Every man has his price; perhaps this is yours. You know your supply has never been adequate. Now is your chance to get on top." Such suggestions were startling and distressing.
