My mother brought Christian Science to my father's family and to my father when he and she were married. While a young girl, I evidenced symptoms of a nervous condition and was examined by the school doctor. He told my parents that I had Saint Vitus's dance, and because of the severity of it, I must be hospitalized. Instead, Christian Science treatment was given me, and I stayed home during a six-week period. I don't recall much more than a weekly visit to the practitioner's office, until one day my father insisted on our dismissing this practitioner and calling on a different one.
Mother took me to his office and told him how discouraged she was, for other healings had been so quick. She said he acted as though he hadn't heard one word she had said; so she repeated her long tale. He simply told her that not one word she had spoken was true. She glanced at me, and she said later that it was as if I had awakened from a dream, for I was my normal self. I was back in school the following day, and I maintained a high average in my class for the rest of the semester.
During the early years of my marriage my husband objected to Christian Science, and I didn't go to church. I read Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and prayed for myself and the children, but my understanding certainly was at a standstill.
