Being, Not Becoming

From the February 1968 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Biology pictures man as in a continual state of becoming. It claims that he starts as a material cell. Next, it attempts to show that this cell becomes man. Finally, it returns man to dust. And mankind more or less generally accept this cell-to-man-to-dust cycle today.

The Bible states, "God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him."Gen. 1:27; The alert thinker asks, "If God, who is infinite Spirit, created man in His image and likeness, can a continually changing material view of man be true?" The answer is No. Mankind have suffered untold sorrows as a result of this false concept, and Christian Science lovingly offers a way out of the helplessness engendered by it.

What is this way? It is to let the divine knowledge or understanding of man's present perfection as the expression of God, infinite Spirit, resurrect human thought. Christ Jesus in his resurrection from the grave presented spiritually scientific evidence which for all time proves powerless the perishable pronouncements of so-called biological science. The belief that man is moving inexorably onward toward a death status was just as prevalent then as it is today. Yet the master Metaphysician proved that an understanding of man's present status as the spiritual image and likeness of God and expression of eternal Life can destroy the false claim of the deteriorative death-process, which is inherent in the acceptance of a material view of man.
