Praying Scripturally

From the February 1968 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Is it wrong to pray for the recovery of the sick?" To this question Mrs. Eddy replies, "Not if we pray Scripturally, with the understanding that God has given all things to those who love Him; but pleading with infinite Love to love us, or to restore health and harmony, and then to admit that it has been lost under His government, is the prayer of doubt and mortal belief that is unavailing in divine Science."Miscellaneous Writings, p. 59;

The Christian Scientist who honestly seeks healing strives to follow and benefit by his Leader's instructions and endeavors to learn to "pray Scripturally" to heal the sick. Turning to the Bible, we find an impressive array of demonstrations of divine law made by patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and others who prayed to the Lord in trouble. Not only diseases, but many other discordant conditions were healed. Whatever the difficulty, their prayers and the solutions were one. These people accepted God as the source of health, security, strength, ability, and supply.

Christ Jesus presents the supreme example of what prayer accomplishes. The Bible tells us, "They brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them."Matt. 4:24; There was no discordant condition too difficult for Jesus to heal. He not only prayed with practical results but taught his disciples how to pray correctly and effectively. All his mighty deeds he performed by prayer.
