One small twig is easily snapped. But many twigs, tightly bound together, will resist increasing pressure. Human organizations have used this simple illustration to explain strength in unity. Unity means to be one, to have singleness of purpose, to have continuity without deviation.
Out of her experience Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, learned that merely human strength is insufficient. She writes, "I once thought that in unity was human strength; but have grown to know that human strength is weakness,—that unity is divine might, giving to human power, peace."Miscellaneous Writings, p. 138;
The church organization she established draws its unity from spiritual sources. It teaches the might and power of the Christ, Truth. Thousands have been blessed by this teaching. Healing and regeneration have resulted. Out of gratitude many have sought church membership. They have agreed to worship God supremely. They have united in their efforts to be God-centered. They work together in unison to further the Cause that is spiritually organized—organized for spiritual purposes. These purposes are to enlighten, heal, and save mankind. This is unity by divine power, the unity that gives "to human power, peace." And this is the strength of the church organization.
