Manhood and Womanhood

From the February 1968 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Are manhood and womanhood two individual and separate states of being, or are they two natures combined in one complete individual?

In the first chapter of Genesis we read that "God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them."Gen. 1:27; Through the teachings of Christian Science we understand why God's image could not be a corporeal mortal, either male or female.

Christian Science shows that man, Spirit's image, or an idea in Mind's creation, must be spiritual and express spiritual qualities, which we can designate as both masculine and feminine. Matter, according to this Science, is merely a phenomenon of mortal thinking. Belief in matter's reality disappears from human consciousness, as a dream disappears, when we become spiritually awakened, or enlightened. Matter is nonexistent in the realm of Spirit, even though mortal mind would claim that matter is necessary to classify gender.
