When a person takes the step of joining a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, he makes a conscious effort to purify his thought; and he finds that active service to the church will help him to maintain this purity and will bring him great benefits. Mrs. Eddy, referring to growth in spirituality, says in Miscellaneous Writings: "By purifying human thought, this state of mind permeates with increased harmony all the minutiae of human affairs. It brings with it wonderful foresight, wisdom, and power; it unselfs the mortal purpose, gives steadiness to resolve, and success to endeavor."Mis., p. 204;
Committee work will probably be among the duties of the new member. Whatever work he decides to accept, he needs to approach it as God's business and to expect and listen for His directions and reward. Each committee has the charge of spreading Christian Science, with its attendant healing, through its own particular activity, whether it be mending hymnals or preparing copies of The Christian Science Monitor for distribution, giving time and work to the beautification of the church and grounds, or doing lecture preparation work.
Christ Jesus set the example for spreading Christliness, and he did it daily at whatever cost to himself. Even betrayal by friends or crucifixion did not deter him. Our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, writes, "Forsaken by all whom he had blessed, this faithful sentinel of God at the highest post of power, charged with the grandest trust of heaven, was ready to be transformed by the renewing of the infinite Spirit."Science and Health, p. 49; If he could carry out his grand trust so unselfishly, surely we can carry out our charge to spread the truth as thousands of other Christian Scientists are lovingly doing today.
