The Bible and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, have been my constant companions for nearly forty years. The truth contained in these precious books has brought loving counsel at all times, comfort in times of grief, instruction in spiritual living, and healing of mind and body.
I well remember one night years ago. I began it in such physical pain that I could not sleep. I had studied earnestly for days, praying to realize man's perfect self as God's beloved. This night I wrapped up in a blanket and sat before the heater, determining to call on a Christian Science practitioner for help when morning came. I thought I had done all I could to help myself and would pass the night reading from current magazines.
But I so felt the need of comfort that I reached for my Bible and Science and Health. Opening the Bible at random, I read a discussion which Jesus had with a group of Pharisees. As I read, I felt at one with the group and marveled at his answers to their questions, and I remember thinking: "His answers are so concrete. There is just no argument against them." With this, I fell asleep. When I awakened two hours later, I was free and went to bed and to sleep.
