The Secret Things of God

From the February 1968 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One of the prophecies regarding Jesus was, "I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world."Matt. 13:35; One might well ask why these things are secret. What is the condition of their revelation or of one's ability to understand them? Jesus spoke of the eyes that see, the ears that hear, and the heart that understands. And from the context of his words one can see that he is referring to spiritual sense as the way one understands the things of God. Paul indicated the reason for the secrecy when he said, "The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned."I Cor. 2:14;

It takes spiritual sense to understand Christian Science, and anyone who seeks such an understanding may conceive an entirely new outlook on life. The Bible speaks of a new heaven and a new earth and of the new man. It says in Revelation, "Behold, I make all things new."Rev. 21:5; This spiritual sense of the Scriptures is what came to Mary Baker Eddy when she discovered Christian Science. She was healed through the spiritual understanding that dawned upon her thought when she was prayerfully considering one of Christ Jesus' healings. Mrs. Eddy speaks very reverently of the Scriptures. She says, "Their spiritual signification appeared; and I apprehended for the first time, in their spiritual meaning, Jesus' teaching and demonstration, and the Principle and rule of spiritual Science and metaphysical healing,—in a word, Christian Science."Retrospection and Introspection, p. 25;

Many people have claimed that the Scriptures are contradictory, enigmatic, and out of date. In every age there are those who through lack of spiritual perception attempt to debunk the Bible and the spiritual significance of its teaching and healing. They will not accept anything as factual if it does not conform to empirical knowledge and the so-called laws of material scientific procedure. They have not yet been able to reach beyond the limitations of material sense, and one could ask in the words of Jesus, "Having eyes, see ye not?"Mark 8:18; To these the spiritual facts of being remain a secret.
