The Responsibility of World Citizenship

From the May 1968 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Scientists are citizens of the world. They understand the great need for utilizing their developed spiritual perception for the good of mankind. They have proved times without number the potency of metaphysical treatment in solving problems arising in their individual lives and are therefore confident that the same omnipotent power is present and active to solve problems of national and international scope.

Students of this Science are well aware that much of the apparent turmoil and unrest visible on the world scene is due to the chemicalizing effect of Truth in world thought. For many decades Christian Scientists have been at work studying, communing with God, and specifically treating disease and other material discords. The cumulative effect of this spiritually mental work is an unloosening and overturning of age-old mortal beliefs and practices. As Christ Jesus prophesied, the visible manifestation of this may appear as a worsening of mankind's trials and tribulations, but the spiritual thinker looks more deeply and perceives what is really going on. He understands the inevitability of the purifying process and patiently persists in realizing the presence and power of omnipotent divine Mind. He knows that the more clearly he sees the allness and absolute control of this one universal intelligent Principle, the sooner will the kingdom of heaven, harmony, be established on earth.

The prophet Ezekiel foresaw the effect of spiritual truth as it penetrates and destroys material thought. He said, "Thus saith the Lord God ... I will overturn, overturn, overturn, it: and it shall be no more, until he come whose right it is; and I will give it him."Ezek. 21:26, 27; And in Science and Health Mrs. Eddy tells us: "Mortal error will vanish in a moral chemicalization. This mental fermentation has begun, and will continue until all errors of belief yield to understanding." Science and Health, p. 96;
